Aging rock star Judas Coyne loves to collect all things dark and strange, so when he sees a ghost for sale online he cant help but buy it for himself. Little does he know that the ghost is the spirit of a father of a groupie of Coyne’s who committed suicide and he blames Coyne for her death. Now, determined to kill Coyne and anyone who aids him, the merciless ghost begins his assault on the rocker’s sanity.
I have been on a bit of a Joe Hill kick since I read Horns and Heart-Shaped box certainly delivered. I love Hill’s writing style. It is realistic and dark without being overly crude and long winded like some horror writers can be. If you like a writing style that is straight to the point but still manages to create a chilling atmosphere, Joe Hill is the writer for you.
This book was good and I enjoyed every action packed moment of it but it isn’t as good as Horns. You feel for the characters and enjoy them but Horns rips your heart out and stomps all over it. This book has its sad scenes but it isn’t to Horns’ level. It is certainly action packed though. I didn’t expect to see so much action in a book about a haunting, and that certainly makes Heart-Shaped Box stand out from the crowd.
If you want a good ghost book with plenty of chilling twists and turns I would recommend that you give this book a read. I will warn you that this is very much an adult book. It deals with molestation and it has some graphic sexual references and violence, so if you are a little sensitive about those things this probably isn’t the book for you.
I gave Heart-Shaped Box 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.com. I will definitely be reading more of Joe Hill’s books in the future. His writing style is addictive and funny, and I just cant get enough of it. He is probably one of my favourite authors at the moment. If you are interested in a contemporary horror novel that has a haunting a little different from the norm I would give this book a read.
