REVIEW: The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

The Last WishSummary:

From GoodReads.com:

“Geralt of Rivia is a witcher. A cunning sorcerer. A merciless assassin.

And a cold-blooded killer.

His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world.

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good. . . and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.

The international hit that inspired the video game: The Witcher.”

This is the first in a five book series by the brilliant Polish author (look up weird name).  The Last Wish is witty, funny, action packed and beautifully written. It has everything you could ever want in a high fantasy novel. Personally I think one of the best things about this book was its writing style. I am not a huge fan of high fantasy novels because they tend to be a bit too wordy for my liking and have a bit of a habit of drawing things out, but this book does not have that problem at all. Everything is straight to the point but at the same time wonderfully described so you can easily picture it all happening in your head as you read it. If you have always been put off high fantasy novels because of the intimidating books like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, you need to check out this book. (I like Lord of the Rings but I know it is a bit scary for some people, so that isn’t a jab at Lord of the Rings)

The characters in this novel also come to life on the page very quickly. I never thought I would say this about an action character who ends up being a main video game character, but Galdart (check) is adorable. I have never seen someone so manly be so awkward. And it doesn’t help that his sidekick is called Dandelion. I don’t care if it is pronounced Dan-dillion, I am going to call him Dandelion because he suits being a big yellow flower.

The book is broken up into several short stories with small chapters in between that are all connected together into an over arcing plot. The short stories are all flashbacks of Galdart’s adventures and what his life is like hunting monsters as a Witcher.

If you like the video game The Witcher, or you are just a fan of fantasy novels or want to get into the genre I would highly recommend this book. I will warn you that it does contain a few sexual scenes to if you are sensitive to things like that or are a bit young maybe read something else instead.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.com. This is a fantastic book and I dont give 5 star ratings that easily. If you are looking for a good fantasy novel, you need to read this book.

Have you read The Last Wish? If so, what did you think of it?
